The Chicago Cubs have given relief pitcher Bob Howry his unconditional release.

His place on the roster will be filled by Carlos Zambrano.

In his second stint with the Cubs, Howry appeared in 24 games and posted a 5.66 ERA. Chicago signed the veteran in late May following his release by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

During his career, Howry has pitched for six teams -- including the White Sox. He has a 3.84 career ERA in 13 big league seasons.
