CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd was held out of the lineup on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals as he deals with the effects of being hit in the face with a foul ball on Friday.

Byrd fouled a ball that hit the ground and bounced up and hit him in the face, resulting in bruising and cuts. He had an X-ray that did not reveal any structural damage.

"We want to be careful," Cubs interim manager Mike Quade said Saturday. "He's a tough guy and he'll let us know when he thinks he's better.

"I'm sure he's sore. It was cut. My sense is he'll be fine. He's day-to-day."

Byrd did not grant interviews Saturday.
