Melvin could be in play for other openings, including the Toronto Blue Jays vacancy. He becomes the third candidate the Cubs have interviewed for the position, joining former Cub and current Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg and former Cleveland Indians skipper Eric Wedge.
Interim manager Mike Quade will also be on the list. At this point, Quade may be considered the front-runner for the job after going 23-11 in his first 34 games since taking over for Lou Piniella. Quade has yet to formally interview with Cubs GM Jim Hendry.
Melvin's interview was set up two weeks ago, according to the major league source. That fact is no reflection on Quade's success guiding the Cubs or the fact that he appears to be the top candidate.
Melvin won a division title in 2007 with the Diamondbacks. That team swept the Cubs in the first round of the playoffs before eventually losing to the Colorado Rockies in the NLCS. Melvin spent this season working as a scout for the New York Mets. Hendry interviewed Melvin in 2003 prior to hiring Dusty Baker.
The Cubs most likely will have their next manager in place in the middle of October.
