Phillies' assistant general manager in charge of player development Chuck LaMar told the paper that he hopes to have the vacancy with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs "filled in the near future."
The Inquirer quoted a source with knowledge of the situation saying Sandberg, who was the Phillies' 20th-round draft pick in 1978, is among the candidates to replace Dave Huppert.
Sandberg was the runner-up to Mike Quade for the Cubs' managerial job. Quade replaced the retired Lou Piniella on an interim basis on Aug. 23 and guided the Cubs to a 24-13 record.
Sandberg, who managed in the Cubs' minor-league system the past four years, admitted he was disappointed to be passed over, and he informed the Cubs last week that he would not return to the Iowa Cubs next season. Sandberg guided Iowa to an 82-62 record last season and was voted the Pacific Coast League manager of the year.
The Cubs' Hall of Fame second baseman has his heart set on managing on the major league level. The Phillies have a first-base coaching position open with the big-league club, but the Inquirer reported that the position likely will go to a minority candidate.
Sandberg was part of an infamous Philadelphia trade when he was thrown in a deal sending Larry Bowa to Chicago for Ivan DeJesus.
