The Chicago Cubs met with agent Scott Boras on Monday night to talk about free-agent first baseman Carlos Pena, according to a major league source with knowledge of the situation.

In addition to Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, special assistant to the GM Greg Maddux also attended the meeting. Maddux was represented by Boras during his playing days.

In addition to their interest in Pena, another source said the Cubs also have talked in their meetings about Adam LaRoche and Lyle Overbay. Pena, LaRoche and Overbay are all left-handed hitting first basemen.

Pena batted .196 with the Tampa Bay Rays last season, with 28 homers and 84 RBIs. LaRoche hit .261 with 25 homers and 100 RBIs with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Overbay hit .243 with 20 homers and 67 RBIs for the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to another source, the Washington Nationals are interested in Pena as well.
