CHICAGO -- Virginia Commonwealth basketball coach Shaka Smart will sing during the seventh-inning stretch at Wrigley Field on May 8, according to the Chicago Cubs.

VCU made an improbable Final Four appearance as a No. 11 seed in March, losing to Butler, 70-62, in the semifinals.

Smart's performance will be a tribute to his late grandfather, Walter King, whose birthday was May 8. King, who died at 90 during VCU's tournament run, took the coach to Cubs games when Smart was a child growing up in Madison, Wis.

"Some of my fondest memories with him are going to Wrigley Field, sitting on the first base side trying to catch some foul balls," Smart said in a March interview on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. Smart also said on the program that he'd definitely accept an invitation to sing during the stretch if he received one.

The game is an afternoon contest against the Cincinnati Reds.
