ST. LOUIS -- Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza will come off the DL and pitch against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday after throwing his second side session of the week on Friday.

"Everything went great with [Garza's side session and recovery]," manager Mike Quade said. "He starts Monday."

Garza went on the DL May 21, retroactive to May 17. He complained of right elbow pain during his side session on May 19. An MRI revealed he had a right elbow contusion.

With Garza coming off the DL, the Cubs most likely will put Rodrigo Lopez in the bullpen and keep left Doug Davis in the rotation. As an experiment, Quade used Lopez in the bullpen Friday night.

"If you're going to use somebody in a different role, you'd like to find out about it," Quade said. "Last night was a good opportunity to use him. Let's see how he gets through it and how soon he can get loose."

The Cubs' fourth and fifth starters have a combined record of 3-14 this season.

In other injury news, third baseman Aramis Ramirez is still day to day after taking a grounder off his face this past Wednesday. Ramirez received seven stitches in his mouth and has considerable swelling on the left side of his face.

"He wasn't really available last night," Quade said. "I'm going to use him off the bench today. If things go well, and so far they have, then I'd love to pencil him in for tomorrow and we are hoping he can make a start for us tomorrow."

Ramirez took batting practice swings both Friday and Saturday.
