Peavy began the season on the DL as he recovered from surgery to repair a detached muscle behind his shoulder. He made five starts, one a three-hit shutout against Cleveland, before he returned to the DL earlier this month with a groin strain.
Peavy, who won the Cy Young with the Padres in 2007, is 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA this season. He is signed through 2012 with a club option for 2013.
He's ready to pitch again and try to stay healthy. Peavy said Tuesday that his arm is as strong as it has been since he underwent the surgery last July.
"I'm tired of battling injury," said Peavy, who has made only 25 starts for the White Sox since being acquired from San Diego at the trade deadline in 2009.
"It's been a recurring theme from my time here in Chicago. ... I'm hoping to put all this to rest and I can pitch the next year and a half here in Chicago and help this team."
To make room for Peavy, the White Sox optioned right-hander Lucas Harrell back to Triple-A Charlotte after Tuesday's game.
