Rose believes the injury happened some time during last season's playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The good news for the Bulls is that he doesn't believe it will cause him to miss any time.
"I don't even know how you get turf toe," Rose said. "I just know that my big toe hurts, and [the Bulls medical staff] said it was turf toe."
The injury apparently hasn't affected Rose this season -- he's averaging 23.8 points and 9.2 assists -- but he knows that the injury could become more serious if he doesn't keep an eye on it.
"You can't bend your toe at all," Rose said. "I thought it was jammed, but talking to the trainers, it was turf toe."
Rose knows he will probably deal with the injury for the rest of his career.
"It's there forever now," he said with a laugh. "My left big toe, it's there forever now so that's going to be an injury I'm going to have for a long time."
The Bulls next play the Golden Warriors on Thursday at the United Center.
