CHICAGO -- Former Iowa point guard Cully Payne has transferred to Loyola, the school announced on Friday.

Payne, who starred at Schaumburg High School, played only five games this past season as a sophomore for the Hawkeyes before suffering a season-ending hernia injury. Last season will count as a medical redshirt season for Payne, according to a Loyola spokesperson. He will have to sit out next season and will have three years of eligiblity remaining for the Ramblers.

"I'm extremely excited about Cully wanting to be a part of something special here at Loyola," newly-named Loyola coach Porter Moser said in a statement. "His toughness, basketball IQ, experience at the point guard position and his character as a student-athlete are what we are looking for in this program. From day one, we made it a priority to recruit Chicago and the state of Illinois and the addition of Cully to our program is a tremendous first step toward making Loyola a viable option for area talent."

As a freshman at Iowa, Payne started 32 games and averaged 8.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He scored a career-high 25 points against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament.

Payne originally committed to DePaul as an eighth grader and later pulled his commitment after his high school junior season. He would later commit to Alabama, but then de-committed due a coaching change. He finally landed at Iowa.

Payne is Moser's first recruit at Loyola.

"I'm excited and honored to be coach Moser's first recruit to Loyola and that means a lot to me personally," Payne said in a statement. "After spending time with him and his staff and getting a chance to see Loyola and all it has to offer, I knew this was the first perfect place for me. I hope that my decision to come to Loyola can help attract other high-level players to play and go to school here."
