The first night game ever played at the Big House will not eschew tradition entirely.

When Notre Dame and Michigan meet for the 39th time on Sept. 10 both squads will wear retro uniforms to mark the occasion. Both programs unveiled the adidas uniforms on Friday.

"We are happy to partner with adidas to help commemorate the first night game at Michigan Stadium with new uniforms," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said in a news release. "It seems fitting that the two schools with the two best winning percentages in college football play in this historic game. I know our players are looking forward to the contest and both teams' new uniforms will only add to the excitement in the Big House on September 10."

Michigan's Brady Hoke was similarly enthusiastic about the throwback look.

"We are excited about playing in this intense rivalry, and this historic night game provides an opportunity to wear a retro-looking uniform that pays homage to our rich Michigan football history," Hoke said. "Our players like the throwback uniforms and it will be something that is exciting for the fans."

To some superstitious Irish fans, the prospect of wearing anything but traditional blue and gold doesn't exactly conjure up joy. The Irish have reserved a special green jersey for big games since the end of the Dan Devine era in 1980. Notre Dame has worn either green jerseys or white jerseys with green numerals 10 times since 1980. The Irish are 5-5 in those games, according to the school's athletic department. The last time Notre Dame wore green jerseys was against Army in Yankee Stadium this past season.

Michigan holds an advantage in the all-time series against Notre Dame with a 22-15-1 record. September's contest will mark the first primetime matchup between the two schools since 1990.
