Red Stars fall 1-0 to Sky Blue FC
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Chicago Red Stars gave up a last-minute goal to Sky Blue FC and lost 1-0 Sunday in front of 3,130 fans at Yurcak Field.
The loss, which dropped Chicago to 4-8-5 (17 points), dealt a severe blow to the Red Stars' playoff hopes with only three games left in the season. They are currently in sixth place with the top four teams in Women's Professional Soccer advancing to the playoffs.
Kerri Hanks' right-footed strike from the top of the 18 came in the 91st minute. Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson, who had the sun in her eyes and a number of players in the box in front of her, said she never saw Hanks take the shot.
The Red Stars have been shut out 10 times this season -- in all eight losses and two scoreless draws."I don't think the team was good enough today in our attack. We didn't create a great deal," said Red Stars head coach Emma Hayes. "Ultimately, I didn't know where we were going to get a goal from."
Chicago was without four starting attacking players because of national team duty. Lindsay Tarpley, Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd are with the United States national team and Karen Carney is away with the English national team.
