Diaz returns to ring vs. Chavez at UIC
Former World Boxing Council lightweight champion David Diaz will return to the ring Sept. 26 for his first bout since losing his belt last year to Manny Pacquiao.
Diaz (34-2-1, 17 knockouts), of Chicago, will face former two-time world champ Jesus Chavez (44-5, 30 KOs) at the UIC Pavilion.
Diaz, a 1996 U.S Olympian, suffered a brutal ninth-round technical knockout at the hands of Pacquiao on June 28, 2008. The 33-year-old was hoping for a fight earlier this year, but he injured a knee ligament.
Chavez was born in Mexico but moved to Chicago at age 5. His struggles, including a conviction on armed robbery and subsequent deportation, have been well-chronicled.
His last bout was an eighth-round TKO loss to Michael Katsidis on April 4. Chavez now fights out of Austin, Texas.
