CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez hopes to return to the lineup on Friday after receiving a cortisone shot in his sore left shoulder on Monday.

Ramirez also received some long-term good news. A doctor who examined Ramirez's shoulder told him he probably won't need surgery to tighten the shoulder capsule.

Ramirez dislocated the shoulder May 8 and was on the disabled list until July 6. He hasn't played since leaving a game in Colorado on Saturday.

"I have a pretty good idea of what I can tolerate," Ramirez said. "In Colorado I tried, but I couldn't do it. It was too painful. But I don't want to miss any more games. I've already been out of the lineup enough."

The Cubs open a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
