Wolves rally for first win
ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Chicago Wolves rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit on Wednesday to get their first win of the season with a 5-4 victory over the Rockford IceHogs.
The Wolves rallied from the deficit with three straight goals at Allstate Arena. Center Matt Anderson scored the winner with 3:11 left in the third period.
Trailing 4-2 five minutes into the third period, Chicago (1-3-0-0) responded with a power-play score from Spencer Machacek to pull within one. Rookie defenseman Paul Postma tied the score at 4 with 12:54 left to play when he cranked a shot from the blue line that evaded Rockford goaltender Corey Crawford. It was also Postma's first professional goal.
Chicago jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 11:39 in with a power-play tally from Anderson. Rockford answered 31 seconds later when Rockford right winger Danny Bois slipped the puck past Wolves goaltender Manny Legace. Rockford then took the lead on its first power play when defenseman Brian Connelly sent a long pass from near the blue line across to center Mark Cullen, which he fired past Legace with 2:28 remaining in the period.
The Wolves came back to tie it at 2 when right winger Tim Stapleton scored at the 11:32 mark of the second period. Rockford then regained the lead when right winger Akim Aliu scored. Rockford left winger Rob Klinkhammer scored at 1:51 in the third period with a wrap-around goal. That set the stage for the Wolves' comeback.
Postma had three points on a goal and two assists and Stapleton a goal and an assist. Legace posted 31 saves to pick up the win in his debut with the Wolves.
The Wolves and IceHogs will match up again at the Rockford MetroCentre on Friday at 7 p.m.
