Mike Powell picks Rhode Island

Brooks senior point guard Mike Powell has committed to Rhode Island.

The 5-foot-10 Powell averaged 18.7 points, 7.5 assists and 4.1 rebounds for the Eagles, who finished third in Class 3A this season. Powell was an ESPNChicago.com all-area selection.

"Mike Powell Jr. is a true floor general," Brooks coach Bobby Locke said. "A throwback point guard. He not only makes plays for himself, but is equally as unselfish deferring to others for the sake of team success. His true strength is his physical and mental toughness defensively. Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships."

Powell joins Notre Dame (Mass.) small forward Trahson Burrell, Coral Gables (Fla.) power forward Jonathan Holton and Kalamazoo Central (Mich.) small forward T.J. Buchanan in Rhode Island's 2011 recruiting class.
