CHICAGO -- Needing to shed one player from their 53-man roster to accommodate the addition of Gaines Adams, the Chicago Bears released veteran tight end Michael Gaines on Saturday.

Gaines signed a one-year deal with the Bears in May, but he was inactive for two of the four games this season. The Bears always considered having a fourth tight end a luxury, so when Desmond Clark returned from a rib injury before the bye, Gaines was deemed expendable.
