Smith mum on report linking Weis, Bears
Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith wouldn't comment Monday on a Chicago Sun-Times report that Charlie Weis would be interested in becoming the Bears offensive coordinator if Ron Turner is fired.
The newspaper attributed the story to a "source close to" Weis, who was fired as Notre Dame's head coach last week.
Turner's job security as the Bears' offensive coordinator has been a source of speculation as the 5-7 Bears have struggled, despite the acquisition of former Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler.
"You'd like for me to comment on something Charlie said? I can't comment," Smith said Monday. "I wouldn't know anything about that.
"We have an offensive coordinator in place now. I can comment about that."
Weis, the New England Patriots' former offensive coordinator, is on the record saying he expects to be coaching in the NFL next season. Smith was asked how he thinks Weis would fare if he returned to the NFL.
"I have no idea how he would do," Smith said. "He was a good coordinator when he was back there then, but that's all I would say."
