Bears interview Chargers' Chudzinski
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears officially announced San Diego Chargers assistant head coach in charge of tight ends Rob Chudzinski is interviewing Thursday for the offensive coordinator position at Halas Hall.
Although Chudzinski's work is held in high regard by the Chargers, having complete control over an offense would further enhance the 42-year-old coach's career, making the job here in Chicago somewhat attractive.
Landing Chudzinski would be a major score for the Bears, according to one of his former bosses, Marty Schottenheimer.
"He's an outstanding football coach. He was with us in San Diego," Schottenheimer said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "He's got a very broad understanding of offensive football. Chud, I think, is one of the best young coaches I've been around, and I would imagine that given the opportunity with the background he has and involvement with the San Diego offense, he would be terrific in that role."
Chudzinski coached tight ends during his first stint in San Diego, in 2005 and 2006, under Schottenheimer.
In 2009, Chudzinski worked on a Chargers' offense that ranked 10th in the NFL in total yards and scored 454 points, good for fourth in the NFL.
He has NFL offensive coordinator experience, running the Cleveland Browns in 2007 to 2008. The Browns ranked eighth in the NFL in scoring and total yards in 2007.
Chudzinski also has play-calling experience from his three seasons as offensive coordinator at the University of Miami (2001-03). He also played at Miami as a three-year starter at tight end.
"I would say if they sign him as offensive coordinator, you need to look toward the sky, because the sun is now rising," Schottenheimer said.
Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who arrived in Cleveland as Chudzinski was leaving, also praised the offensive strategist.
"That guy is outstanding," Ryan said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show." "There's a great mind right there.
"He does a great job. He had this Cleveland Browns coffense clicking just two years ago. He's been fantastic."
