LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears signed restricted free-agent linebacker Nick Roach to a one-year tender offer for $1.684 million.

Roach, who returned to the Chicago area in late February and began working out at Halas Hall on March 1, figures to compete with newly re-signed veteran Pisa Tinoisamoa for a starting spot at strong side linebacker.

Roach, who went undrafted out of Northwestern in 2007, started 15 games in 2009, setting career highs in tackles (82), tackles for loss (10), forced fumbles (three), sacks (two), fumble recoveries (one), pass breakups (four) and special teams stops (nine). Extremely versatile, Roach also lined up for three games at middle linebacker last season, recording at least 10 tackles each start.

A three-year veteran, Roach has started 24 of 33 career games with 122 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, two sacks, one fumble recovery, five pass breakups and 21 special teams stops.

The Bears would receive a second-round draft pick if they allowed Roach to sign with another team.
