Earl Bennett to miss preseason opener
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett will miss Saturday night's preseason opener at San Diego because of a hamstring injury, according to head coach Lovie Smith.
"He won't play this week," Smith said. "Hamstrings take a little bit [of time to heal], especially for one of the skill positions."
The hamstring injury is the latest setback for Bennett, who previously underwent offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, which limited his participation during minicamps and organized team activities.
The problem for Bennett, though, is time doesn't appear to be on his side. Entering his third season, coming off a 2009 campaign in which he ranked second on the team with 717 yards on 54 catches, Bennett is a third-string option on the depth chart, which was released Monday. He is currently behind Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu and Rashied Davis.
