CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd left Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after the third inning after being hit by a foul ball.

Byrd hit the ball that bounced off the ground hit him in the right cheek, causing a bruise and facial laceration.

"Basically in layman's terms, he has a small cut under his eye and a facial bruise," Cubs interim manager Mike Quade said. "Being as cautious as they can be with him, they sent him to Northwestern [Hospital] to make sure everything in that area is OK."

Byrd had an X-ray and results were not announced.
