Toews doesn't touch conference trophy
The Hawks had just swept the San Jose Sharks out of the Western Conference finals with a 4-2 win, and Toews skated over for the presentation of the trophy to the conference champs.
But he didn't touch it.
"To me, it's not being superstitious," Toews said. "It's saying we're here for bigger and better things.
"We're just happy about winning this round and moving on. That's what it's all about. We're happy about that and have nothing to celebrate. No reason to pick up any hardware yet, because it's meaningless to us."
Some believe it's bad luck to touch any trophy except the Stanley Cup. The Pittsburgh Penguins didn't touch the Wales Trophy, which is awarded to the Eastern Conference champs, two years ago. So Sidney Crosby changed things up last year and touched it, and the Penguins went on to win it all.
Toews said he wasn't thinking about what to do until he received a call from Patrick Sharp.
"Sharpie was the one who brought it to my attention before the game," Toews said. "I hadn't thought about it at all, and he asked me if I had any plans for after the game. I thought he was talking about dinner plans."
At least Toews admitted that he saw the trophy.
"It caught my eye," he said. "It was shiny."
