Instant Classic: Paterno wins No. 324

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno became the winningest coach in major college football history on Saturday when his Nittany Lions rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat Ohio State, 29-27, in State College, Pa. The win was No. 324 for Paterno, who passed Bear Bryant for the record. Paterno has been the team's head coach since 1966. ESPN Classic will celebrate Paterno's historic win with the presentation of the game as an Instant Classic on Wednesday at 9 and midnight ET.

The Nittany Lions trailed 27-9 in the third quarter before coming back to win their second straight game after an 0-4 start. Zack Mills completed 17 of 32 passes to break his own freshman passing record of 280 yards and two touchdowns. Mills also ran for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Early in the third, Mills ran 69 yards on a quarterback keeper to bring Penn State within 27-15 after the 2-point conversion failed. It was the longest Penn State run by a quarterback since 1991.

  • Mills continued to dominate later in the period when he struck again on just two plays from scrimmage, hitting Toby Johnson for a 26-yard score with 4:40 remaining in the third.

Two plays into the fourth quarter, Mills helped give his team its first lead. After recovering a missed snap and still completing a 31-yard pass to R.J. Luke on the first play, Mills completed a 14-yard TD pass to Eric McCoo.

Paterno had said the record wasn't a big deal -- until Saturday.

"You never think it's going to be a big deal until it happens," he said.
