Louisville will start Devonte Fields at outside linebacker when the Cards play No. 6 Auburn on Saturday. The former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year has been on campus for about a month after transferring in from junior college, where he spent a year after TCU dismissed him for allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend. Meanwhile, the Louisville quarterback situation is not as clear. Bobby Petrino listed Reggie Bonnafon or Kyle Bolin or Will Gardner or Lamar Jackson as the starter on the depth chart.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg and Sharon Katz break down why the Football Power Index (FPI) is only giving Alabama a 5% chance to win the SEC. One simple answer: a brutal strength of schedule.

K-State has named Jesse Ertz its starting QB. Ertz won a four-way competition with Joe Hubener, Alex Delton and Jonathan Banks. Said coach Bill Snyder, “We want a balanced QB who can run it, throw it, make good decisions. (Ertz) can do those things.” Ertz has some big shoes to fill. He’s succeeding the school’s all-time season passing leader, Jake Waters.

The return of QB Nate Sudfeld from injury figures to be key for Indiana as it tries to get to a bowl game, and coach Kevin Wilson gave him glowing reviews coming out of training camp. "He's not truly been hit, but other than that he's looked great," Wilson said. "Best preseason he's had. Very impressive, and I think he set himself up to have a very strong year."

The Buckeyes may have said publicly they won't decide who is starting under center until they run onto the field against Virginia Tech, but ESPN's Mike Golic thinks the players already know.

Urban Meyer has no interest in hearing these two words said by his Ohio State team: "Defend" or "revenge." Meyer doesn't want focus to be on a repeat national title or trying to get retribution on Virginia Tech, just playing "nine units strong" to open the season.

Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said returning five starters on the offensive line has been crucial in evaluating his entire offense ahead of the 2015 season. "I can't tell you how big that is for us," Hazell said. "It's been a blessing. We talk about not being able to evaluate quarterbacks or running backs because we were always breaking down up front. That hasn't been the case (this year)."

Harbaugh won't reveal starting QB

Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday he has informed competing quarterbacks Jake Rudock and Shane Morris of his decision on a starter for the Wolverines' opener Thursday night at Utah. When will we know?

Sam Khan Jr. ESPN Staff Writer

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin on health status of LBs Otaro Alaka & A.J. Hilliard: "I don't know that they will be [available on Saturday]." Declined to elaborate further. If they're missing, that would be a blow to their depth and quality at the position vs. Arizona State.

How will Brandon Harris manage?

ESPN's Danny Kanell says he'll be just fine, because the LSU QB has Leonard Fournette lining up in the backfield, Malachi Dupre on the outside and Cam Cameron calling the plays.

Clemson's Swinney: We're not elite yet

Dabo Swinney believes his team isn't ready to be considered elite, but at the same time, "I feel like we're one of those teams coming into the season where we have a shot and that's all you can ask for."

Greg Ostendorf ESPN Staff Writer

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn talking about his QB Jeremy Johnson: "He's to the point that he's tired of everybody talking about him, predicting this. He just wants to get out there and play. He wants to prove himself. So I think he's in a very good spot mentally right now going into his first game."

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Jim Harbaugh was asked today if the bright spotlight on him might inhibit the development of Michigan players. “Our mindset is that we win as a team,” he said. “There’s nobody above the team. No coach. No player. Everybody does a little, and it adds up to a lot. If you or somebody else has a different mindset, that’s not our mindset.”

Is TCU QB Trevone Boykin overrated?

The Horned Frogs' do-it-all quarterback is one of college football's biggest stars and a leading Heisman candidate. But, when you look at his QBR ratings, he is merely mortal.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said his players will benefit against Alabama this week from experience against Auburn, Ohio State and LSU last year: "At the end of the day, it’s this group of players and their group of players. (But) it’s human nature to refer back to experiences you had."

Greg Ostendorf ESPN Staff Writer

The depth chart at Auburn is out and the starting QB is...OK, we all knew Jeremy Johnson was going to start. But the biggest surprise might be that's there no "OR" at RB. Roc Thomas wins the job and will get the start Saturday against Louisville. If he can keep the job all year, don't be surprised if he's among the SEC's rushing leaders.
