The Texas Rangers traded outfielder Greg Golson to the New York Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for minor league infielder Mitch Hilligoss and cash considerations.

Golson was designated for assignment Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for Khalil Greene.

Hilligoss, 24, hit .275 in his career over four professional seasons. He was taken by the Yankees in the sixth round in 2006 and has played primarily third base and shortstop.

Golson, 24, played mainly at Triple-A Oklahoma City last season. He played in one game for the Rangers in May. He batted .258 with two home runs, 17 doubles and 40 RBIs in 123 games.
