The Texas Rangers placed infielder Cristian Guzman on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right quadriceps strain before their game against the Boston Red Sox.

Guzman has batted just .088 (3-for-34) in 10 games at second base for Texas. He was acquired in a July 31 trade with the Washington Nationals.

The move points toward increased playing time for Rangers infielder Andres Blanco, who was acquired by the Rangers just days before the season started. The switch hitter is batting .228 with three RBIs for Texas and was 1-for-5 in Friday's comeback win over the Red Sox.

To take Guzman's place on the 25-man roster, the Rangers recalled right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop, who will be available out of the bullpen against the Red Sox.

Strop, 25, will be in his fourth stint with the Rangers this season. He has no record and a 2.45 ERA in four relief outings for Texas in 2010, spending the rest of the year at Triple-A Oklahoma.

The converted outfielder is 1-2 with 10 saves and a 2.11 ERA in 35 relief appearances for Oklahoma City this season.

The Rangers also announced that Michael Thomas has been acquired from the Red Sox to complete the July 31 trade for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The 6-4, 220-pound Thomas, a product of Southern University, is expected to be converted from catcher to pitcher by the Rangers.
