The Dallas Mavericks will be the Phoenix Suns' guests in the third outdoor preseason game in modern NBA history, it was announced Thursday.

The Western Conference rivals will play Oct. 9 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

It will be the third consecutive preseason that the Suns will play a game in the 16,000-seat roofless arena, part of an 80-acre complex, where the Santa Rosa Mountains serve as a backdrop.

"NBA fans in the Coachella Valley will see two of the NBA's most popular and entertaining teams square off in the world's most picturesque outdoor setting for basketball," Suns president and CEO Rick Welts said in a statement.

The Denver Nuggets beat the Suns at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in an Oct. 11, 2008 preseason game, which was the first outdoor NBA game of the modern era.

The Suns lost to the Golden State Warriors in a 2009 preseason game at the facility, which is located about 250 miles from Phoenix.
