UNIVERSITY PARK -- SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has a slight tear in the labrum of his separated left shoulder, coach June Jones said Tuesday.
Mitchell, who did not practice, is scheduled to see a doctor Wednesday to determine whether he can return to the field. If Mitchell can't play, freshman Kyle Padron will start against Tulsa on Saturday.
Mitchell said he's sore, but will play if the doctors clear him. The big question is whether playing will make the injury worse.
"I can throw fine and I can run fine," Mitchell said. "It's taking that hit or putting out a stiff arm and jam it back out. It's pretty light damage, and we want to keep it that way.
Mitchell even mentioned Sam Bradford's shoulder injury, noting that he didn't want to return too soon and risk being out for the rest of the season.
Padron, from Southlake Carroll, is preparing to start. He alternated with Braden Smith when Mitchell was injured Saturday.
"He has to grow up in a hurry if he's going to play," Jones said. "Being a quarterback, experience is the key. He got a touch of it last week. He battled last week and completed some balls and did is job."
