"Nathan and Derek were neck-and-neck in terms of production throughout fall camp," Todd Dodge said. "We made a decision based upon Nathan's experience that he gained last season."
Tune threw for 646 yards and five touchdowns last season, and he had a 64.5 completion percentage for North Texas (2-10). He made his first career start at defending national champion Alabama last season, throwing for 126 yards and a 34-yard TD pass.
"Nathan has developed both physically and with his mental approach to the game," Dodge said. "With either quarterback we knew we had a great leader who had the capability of giving us great production.
"It was important to us to choose one guy and for the team and the coaching staff to rally around that decision. Nathan knows that he has the full support of everyone on this team and I expect him to respond accordingly."
The Mean Green open the season Sept. 4 at Clemson. The game is scheduled to be televised by ESPNU.
