FRISCO, Texas -- The Dallas Stars placed defenseman Nicklas Grossman on injured reserve with a lower-body injury Saturday and recalled defenseman Maxime Fortunus from the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Grossman was injured in Wednesday's loss to the New York Rangers. He appeared to get hit in the knee area. Grossman, 24, has played with Stephane Robidas on the top defensive pair for the Stars all season. He has four points (no goals, four assists) in 41 games and is tied for second on the team with a plus-5 rating. He's in his third season with the Stars.

Fortunus, 26, made his NHL debut Dec. 19 against Detroit and has played in five NHL games. He has yet to record a point. Fortunus has six goals and five assists in 34 games for the Texas Stars this season. Fortunus could step into the lineup with Matt Niskanen or Jeff Woywitka becoming a healthy scratch. Or he could simply provide the club with depth should other injuries occur.

The Stars played without Grossman on Friday as coach Marc Crawford had to juggle the pairs. Mark Fistric was paired with Robidas. Karlis Skrastins played with Niskanen. And Woywitka and Trevor Daley teamed up in a 4-3 win over the Islanders.

Grossman will be eligible to return from IR on Thursday.
