DENTON, Texas -- North Texas has fired coach Shanice Stephens after three seasons.

The Mean Green were 5-25 this season. Stephens was 25-67 overall, including a 13-39 Sun Belt Conference record.

Stephens had two years left on the five-year contract she got in 2008 when she replaced Tina Slinker, who had been the Mean Green coach for 19 seasons.

Athletic director Rick Villarreal said Thursday the program didn't make the necessary strides to close the gap with elite teams in the conference.

Stephens was an assistant coach at Clemson when, at age 36, she came to North Texas as the youngest head coach in the Sun Belt Conference. She also spent nine seasons at Rice.
