The Dallas Cowboys denied the Houston Texans permission to interview linebackers coach Reggie Herring for the same position, according to a source.

With Wade Phillips becoming the new defensive coordinator with the Texans, he's made an effort to get Herring, who coached for him with the Cowboys for three seasons.

Herring previously had coached the Texans' linebackers for two seasons (2002 and 2003) before leaving to become the defensive coordinator at N.C. State.

Newly named Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said no timetable has been set regarding the coaching staff, which could have four openings.

Ray Sherman (wide receivers), John Garrett (tight ends), Chris Boniol (kicking consultant) and Wade Wilson (quarterbacks coach) have contracts that will expire shortly after the 2010 season.
