Woodruff's forgotten run to Olympic glory
Editor's note: John Woodruff died Oct. 30, 2007, at the age of 92.
The voice, carried by phone, is weak and difficult to understand.
Too many years. Too many ailments. Once, John Woodruff was the world's premier half-miler. At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin -- the Hitler Games, in which Jesse Owens won four gold medals -- Woodruff won one of the most extraordinary races in Olympic history. That was 71 years ago. And while Owens plays a leading role in American sports lore, John Woodruff has slipped into anonymity, along with eight other African-American medal winners from the '36 Games.
