Down time during spring training is an interesting thing. Once we leave the field either at 1 p.m., if I'm not playing that day, or sometime around 4-5 p.m., the remainder of the day is kind of a toss-up on what to do with the time. This past week, I took time after a day at the field to go and watch the movie "Semi-Pro," starring Will Ferrell. I like a lot of movies that Will has been in and also the characters that he has played. The previews for the movie looked good, so I decided to check it out.
The movie had some funny laughs, and since I'm also a big Outkast fan and
Andre Benjamin was in the movie, I was pleased. On the flip side, the movie was kind of slow at times, and I was waiting for some more funny stuff to happen. Overall the movie was funny at times, but if you aren't in a rush to see it, you should just wait until it comes out on DVD.
This kind of got me thinking of some of my favorite comedies of all time, the ones that I can watch over and over again no matter how many times I've seen them. Not in any particular order, here are my favorite comedies:
• Money Talks
• Nothing to Lose
• Friday
• Original Kings of Comedy
• Rush Hour
All of these movies have some of my funniest and favorite actors --
Chris Tucker,
Martin Lawrence and
Cedric the Entertainer, just to name a few. There are those movies that if they are on TV, or if I have the DVD with me, I can watch them any time, any day. There are a lot of others that I love as well, and in time as I watch them over and over again for the 20th or so time, then maybe they may slide into my top five.
On a side note, I'd like to congratulate the SMU women's basketball team for winning the Conference USA title and earning a berth into the women's NCAA tournament. SMU beat UTEP, a team that didn't lose a single regular season conference game this past weekend, in the conference tournament finals in Orlando. I went down to speak to some of the student-athletes at SMU this offseason about being a student-athlete, odds of making it as a pro (which are very low for all you parents out there), and the importance of education. The women's team was a group I spoke to actually a few hours before a game which they won (perhaps I offered the team a little motivation).
On another side note,
Rhonda Rompola, the women's head coach at SMU, was actually in an episode of The Cosby Show. The episode involved Cliff (
Bill Cosby) and his doctors who played a game against the female nurses. Rompola was one of the nurses who took part in the episode.
