East St. Louis is flying high

The East St. Louis (Ill.) High Flyers have been doing some serious damage to their conference opponents lately. After losing their first game in the Herbstreit Classic to Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio), the Flyers have not been stopped in their last four games, outscoring their opponents 239 to 33 whileracking up at least 50 points in each game.
With a roster that includes wide receivers (and ESPNU 150 prospects) Terry Hawthorne and Kraig Appleton, it's really not surprising that the Flyers are running through defenses. But the biggest surprise has been maturation of junior QB Detchauz Wray, according to the coaching staff. Over the summer, we got to see the Flyers in person at the NIKE 7ON in Portland. It was evident they were extremely talented but lacked a leader at the quarterback position. So far this fall, the young QB has stepped up to the challenge and has shown flashes of even greater potential.
"The team has not even put it all together yet," said coach Darren Sunkett. East St. Louis was ranked No. 45 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 preseason poll, but with the opening game loss dropped the Flyers out of the rankings. If they continue to roll over opponents, it will be hard for the voters not to give them another look later in the year. This week they face conference foe Collinsville (Ill.).
