• Manny Navarro of The Miami Herald takes a look at the recent trend of young head coaches at Dade and Broward County high schools. Navarro points to the slim salaries that coaches are paid in the area and how many of the established veterans have moved onto higher-paying jobs elsewhere. A quote from Cypress Bay head coach Mark Guandolo is also important to take into account regarding high school coaching. ''It's more than just football,'' said Guandolo, a 22-year veteran. "Dade and Broward are tough places to grow up. There have been a lot of great coaches who have set a lot of young men on the right track. I don't want to imagine where we'd be without them."

• Wichita (Kan.) Bishop Carroll junior quarterback Blake Bell continues to make a strong push for Junior All-American honors. Bell was 18-of-26 for 267 yards and five TDs (one rushing) in just over one half of play in a 54-6 victory over West High on Friday. For the season so far, the 6-6 210-pounder has 2,061 yards passing and 33 touchdowns, with just three interceptions.
• Tampa Plant and Elite 11 QB Aaron Murray will have season-ending surgery Friday, reports The Tampa Tribune. Murray finishes his amazing high school career with 79 touchdown passes in just 19 starts.
