• It wasn't a game involving FAB 50 teams (those start Friday), but Orange Lutheran scored a key 24-21 win over Mater Dei Thursday in a battle of two of Orange County's (California) top programs, reports Steve Fryer of The Orange County Register. The outcome made it three straight seasons that the three power schools in the highly-competitive Trinity League, have all beat each other to finish in a three-way tie. Mater Dei beat Servite, Servite beat Orange Lutheran and Orange Lutheran beat Mater Dei -- amazingly that scenario has now played out in three consecutive years. Also of note from the game, USC-bound QB Matt Barkley completed 7 of 16 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown, ending the night with 9,095 career passing yards, only 87 yards behind the Orange County record of 9,182 held by Todd Marinovich, who was in attendance.

As Roosevelt grad and Heisman winner Mike Garrett notes, "The teams might both be great or they might both be down, but it's always a big game and extremely important to the fans of each team. That game is like a season within a season."
