Sophomore Phillip Ely threw for two touchdowns and Plant survived a late rally Friday night to upset Armwood, 17-14, in the Class 4A-Region 3 Final at Dad's Stadium. Tim Phillips scampered for 182 yards and three touchdowns as Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) avenged an earlier loss to St. X with a 28-21 win to advance to the 6A state final. The Shamrocks (13-1) will try for their fourth consecutive state championship and seventh in eight years when they face Simon Kenton (10-4) next week, reports The Louisville Courier-Journal.

The nation's longest current active winning streak is done at 89, as South Panola went down Friday night in the Mississippi 5A championship game. After Meridian missed a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation, James Barnett scored from two yards out and then the Wildcats' defense held on downs. South Panola had not lost a game since falling 21-14 to Wayne County in the 2002 Class 5A title game and the nation's longest active winning streak now belongs to Maryville (Tenn.) High at 74.
