DETROIT -- On the way to basketball's national championship, a football atmosphere broke out.

Everything in and around Detroit right now screams late November instead of early April. The air is cold enough that you can see your breath; the streets have small piles of snow sitting on the curbs and the fans are wearing hooded sweatshirts and knit caps, most chanting, "Go Green, Go White." And then, of course, there is massive Ford Field, fit for football or a telescope to watch hoops.

A small pocket of North Carolina fans, meantime, huddled like ducks out of water. This is Big Ten football, not ACC.
