DETROIT -- I've had NBA people tell me that UNC freshman Ed Davis might be a first-round pick if he declared for June's draft.

Davis, a 6-foot-10 forward from Richmond, Va., averaged only 19 minutes in 37 games before tonight. He averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, but seemed to get better each and every week.

Davis is giving Michigan State's front line a lot of problems early in tonight's championship game. He has seven points on 3-for-4 shooting and has grabbed five rebounds. Deon Thompson is giving the Heels another unexpected contribution with nine points and two boards.
