WASHINGTON -- Bemidji State coach Tom Serratore said the new rule in college hockey is the first team to three goals wins.
He better hope that rule can be broken.
After a scoreless first period, Miami jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the Beavers after 40 minutes of play in the first national semifinal at the Verizon Center.
Miami opened the scoring at 3:56 of the second with a power-play goal from Tommy Wingels, his ninth of the season. The sophomore winger took a pass from Andy Miele and fired a wrister that beat Bemidji goalie Matt Dalton, who appeared to be screened by Gary Steffes.
The RedHawks' second goal came at 8:35 to make it 2-0 when Wingels made a backhand pass behind Bemidji defenseman Cody Bostock from deep across the slot that found an outstretched Alden Hirschfeld, who redirected the puck past a sprawling Dalton.
Bemidji didn't record a shot until the 8:04 mark of the period and was outshot 10-6 in the middle 20 minutes. But the Beavers did get on the board with a power-play goal at 9:45 to trim the Miami lead to 2-1 when Matt Read scored his 15th of the season.
The RedHawks regained their two-goal lead when Bill Loupee cleaned up a rebound on the edge of the crease after a shot from Will Weber at 10:46 to make it 3-1 Miami.
