Wide out
Kenneth Scott (Ontario, Calif./ Colony) picked up his third scholarship offer and his first from an in-state school.
"I just got offered by San Diego State," Scott said. "I'm pretty excited about this one because I've already visited the school and I like the new coaching staff a lot. They have a great campus, I went to their last game of the season a year ago and really liked it there a lot.
"I know Al Borges is the offensive coordinator and they'll run a pro-style offense, which is similar to my high school offense. So I know the learning curve will be shorter for me and I'll be able to adjust to it a lot easier than another type of offense. He was at UCLA and had a lot of success there, so I think the team will be good in the future."
Scott was previously offered by Colorado State and UTEP, but said the Aztecs are very intriguing to him at the moment.
"Coach [Rocky] Long, the former head coach at New Mexico, is the one recruiting me," Scott said. "With coach Long and coach Borges, that's a good staff right there. I'm definitely going to check them out in the summer and I'm looking forward to finding out as much as I can about them."
Big 12 offer for Shaw
Joshua Shaw (Palmdale, Calif.) continues to see his stock soar and the talented corner picked up his biggest offer to date.
"Oklahoma just offered me," Shaw said. "That's a huge one, Oklahoma is a national program that is competing for a national title every year. They have a great defense and I have a ton of interest in them right now.
"Coach Bobby Wright is the one recruiting me and he told me they lose both starting corners after this season. With an opportunity to compete for early playing time and all the other great things about the school, I'm giving them a lot of heavy consideration right now."
Shaw had a great showing at the recent NorCal Nike Camp and was among the top college prospects in attendance, regardless of position. Arizona and Boise State offered late last week bringing his total number to 12 at the moment.
Metcalf finds a home
The wait is finally over for Compton (Calif.) athlete Chris Metcalf. The former USC commit took an official visit to Nevada this past weekend and signed a letter of intent with the Wolfpack on Monday.
"He really liked it there and felt like it was a great fit for him," Compton coach Calvin Bryant said. "Everything kind of came together pretty quickly. They had been talking with him for a while and then Chris decided to take a visit and just felt so comfortable there.
"Nevada has a good coaching staff and have always had some strong offenses. They want to build up the defense and feel Chris could be a great centerpiece for that."
Metcalf committed early last summer to USC, but the week of signing day, he was not sent a letter of intent. There were questions about his grades and it appeared Oregon would be the ultimate destination. In the end, Nevada pulled in Metcalf and he becomes one of the most highly-touted recruits the school has ever signed.
West Notes
• Running back Forrest Hightower (Concord, Calif.) had a nice showing at the Nike camp, flashing a nice burst and change-of-direction ability. Wyoming and Arizona have offered and the back said Arizona State, Arizona, Wyoming, UCLA and Boise State top his list.
• Adonis Smith (San Mateo, Calif./ Serra) is emerging as one of the top running back recruits in the state. Washington State was his first offer and Utah, Northwestern, San Diego State and Idaho have all since followed suit. Smith said he's open, but is partial to all the schools that have offered so far.
• Quarterback Tyler Bray (Kingsburg, Calif.) opened a lot of eyes at the Nike camp on Sunday. The 6-6, 190-pound signal caller was rated among the top five quarterbacks. Bray has an offer from Fresno State and has the Bulldogs leading over UCLA and Oregon State right now.
• Tre Sayles (Corona, Calif./Santiago) was one of the top safety prospects at the Stanford NFTC. The 6-1, 195-pounder has excellent size and moves very well. UTEP recently offered -- Sayles first offer of the year -- and the Miners are in his top four along with Stanford, UCLA and Northwestern.
