One of the questions heading into this game was if Southern Miss would pitch around Dustin Ackley.
We didn't find out in the first inning because the Golden Eagles didn't get a chance to.
J.R. Ballinger walked Ben Bunting to start the game, vanishing any thoughts of walking No. 2 hitter Ackley in the first. Ackley took advantage with a single that scored Bunting, who had advanced to second a wild pitch, putting North Carolina up 1-0.
Southern Miss couldn't muster a run to tie things up in the bottom of the inning. After Bo David struck out looking, James Ewing was walked and advanced to second on a fielder's choice off Kameron Brunty's ground ball. Corey Stevens grounded out to end the inning.
