When it comes to ESPN RISE preseason FAB 50 No. 10 Prattville's (Ala.) star quarterback Sam Gibson, there is more than meets the eye.

The road to football stardom for the 6-foot-2, 205-pound future LSU Tiger has not been easy. His father was shot and killed in gang-related activity in Los Angeles six months before his was born and his mother served two years in prison. With help from family members, he and his mother moved to Alabama and now sees the world differently. Jeff Sentell of The Birmingham News has the full feature.

• Georgia Region 1-AAAAA is home to preseason FAB 50 No. 11 Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.), but is also one of the most competitive and tradition-rich divisions in the nation. Six teams from Region 1-AAAAA have won 20 Georgia state titles since 1976 -- Lowndes, Valdosta, Warner Robins, Northside (Warner Robins), Colquitt County (Moultrie) and Tift County (Tifton). Georgia High School Football Daily has a complete breakdown of the region.

Lowndes enters the year as the region favorite and will be led by two future Florida State Seminoles in 6-foot-4, 290 pound two-way lineman Ed Christian and 6-3, 200 pound playmaking linebacker Telvin Smith. At least four other Vikings already hold Division I scholarship offers, but head coach Randy McPherson will have to replace the 2008 Georgia State Player of the Year and EA SPORTS All-American Greg Reid, who starred at both running back and defensive back a year ago.

According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, the Santa Monica (Calif.) High School Vikings are looking to yoga to help improve their fortunes this fall. This probably wouldn't go over as big in Georgia or Texas as it will with the kids at Santa Monica, but give credit to new head coach Travis Clark for thinking outside the box.
