7:10 p.m. ETYankees closer Mariano Rivera told reporters that he plans to have a talk with set-up man Phil Hughes, who was a model of reliability during the regular season, but has been eminently hittable in the playoffs. Precisely what Rivera plans to say to Hughes, he kept to himself.
"Mo did it on his own,'' manager Joe Girardi said. "That's the great thing about having the veteran players that we have. They're not afraid to speak up.''
Hughes is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in six postseason appearances. He's allowed nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, and the Twins and Angels have hit .391 against him. Opponents batted only .217 against Hughes during the regular season.
