Harrington brings home second consecutive major
Each week I will talk about the world of sports:
• It was an incredible week for sports fans. The Olympic opening ceremony was so impressive. There was news in the NFL, baseball, golf wow.
• Let's start with the Brett Favre situation. I was wondering if it would ever be resolved, but now Brett is a Jet and the Packers feel like they can move on. Aaron Rodgers will get his chance to prove himself without Favre looking over his shoulder. I believe it was a good deal for the Jets as Favre is Mr. Personality. Now all he has to do is learn the playbook quickly and win! I believe he will produce and be a mega-star in the Big Apple. Look at all the Favre jerseys that sold within a day of the trade!
• It didn't take Chad Pennington long to land on his feet after he was let go in New York. The phone rang and his former boss, Bill Parcells, was interested. Pennington is a Dolphin now and he should start the regular-season opener -- against the Jets! It was a great addition for Miami, a franchise that really needed a veteran leader at quarterback.
• USA basketball got off to a slow start against the host country, but the athleticism and ability to score inside easily was a difference in a blowout over Yao Ming and company. My friends, Mike Krzyzewski has so many talented weapons on this squad. I see the gold coming home to the states, baby!
• Michael Phelps got off to a great start by setting a world record in the 400 individual medley. That's one gold down, seven to go!
• The Tampa Bay Rays are not going to go away as the lead continues in the AL East. Saturday's comeback victory in Seattle had to be another confidence booster for Joe Maddon's club. Meanwhile the Yankees have an uphill climb as injuries to the pitching staff continue to take a toll. With less than 50 games left, it is not going to be easy as the Yankees try to extend their playoff appearance streak. The last non-labor related season the team missed the playoffs was 1993.
• I know Tiger Woods was not there, but you have to give credit to Paddy Harrington for winning the PGA Championship. That's right, he won back-to-back major events after capturing the British Open. Harrington made three clutch putts down the stretch to beat out Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis. Give Harrington a lot of credit for coming through under pressure.
