Poor attitudes can trump talent
Looking at some of today's athletes, you hear too many stories about attitude, attitude, attitude.
Some are positive stories, but too many are negative.
Think about some of the prima donnas that play the game, whether it is baseball, football or basketball. How about Allen Iverson when he was with the Sixers, and the famous remarks about, "it's only practice." He showed an attitude by showing up late or not even coming at all. Larry Brown demanded effort and there were times Iverson didn't give it to him.
In baseball, we had seen Manny being Manny. Yes, he is a very talented athlete, a difference maker. Was he worth the trouble in Boston? Many will look at talent taking over, but no individual is bigger than the game.
The Red Sox moved on after Ramirez became such a distraction in the locker room. His teammates, coaches and administration probably felt better after he left.
What about the defensive back for the Cowboys, Mr. Adam Jones. He had chance after chance, and even with Jerry Jones, along with several former and current players helping him, he blew it big time. Some guys just do not learn for their mistakes.
Also in the NFL, Plaxico Burress has had his share of problems. He wasn't in the starting lineup in a win against Pittsburgh, clearly a disciplinary message sent by coach Tom Coughlin.
Burress will eventually find out he is not bigger than the game. He will learn that the team will go on without him if he keeps making poor judgments, failing to communicate if he misses practice or a therapy session to help heal an injury. The Giants have plenty of offensive weapons, so Burress should watch his step.
When will some of these athletes grow up. They are making millions playing a kids game, having an opportunity of a lifetime. They have contacts all over the world that can help them after their careers.
They think they are more important than everyone else. They have people catering to them, and spoiling them doesn't help matters. I hope Coughlin continues to stand up and let Burress have it. The Giants are capable of moving on without him.
