Madness starts a little early
If Wednesday's results around college basketball are any indication, Championship Week could be really wacky!
Just look at some of the results in the SEC. Kentucky needed a win badly to boost its chances of going to another big dance. The Wildcats were at Rupp Arena, playing before its normal 24,000 Big Blue supporters. Georgia came in with a 2-14 mark in its prior 16 games, and no SEC road wins this season.
That didn't seem to matter to interim head coach Pete Herrmann and his kids. Terrence Woodbury had a monster game and Georgia kept nailing the trifecta, leading to shock city.
Billy Gillispie had to be stunned by that result. Now the Wildcats face Florida in a key game this weekend. Kentucky is struggling down the stretch, going 3-7 in its last 10 games.
LSU already clinched the SEC West title, but it was still surprising to see Vanderbilt, which came in 6-8 in league play, knock off the Tigers in Baton Rouge.
What about Texas Tech, which entered the night 2-12 in Big 12 play? Pat Knight's Red Raiders were led by Alan Voskuil's 35 points in a shocker over Kansas.
Missouri was coming off a blowout loss to the Jayhawks, so you knew the Tigers were going to be angry. Mike Anderson's club took out its frustration on Oklahoma, sending the Sooners to the sidelines with an L.
Northwestern sent a message to the Big Ten and the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee by upsetting Purdue in West Lafayette. The Wildcats are riding a three-game win streak and sit at 17-11, including wins at Michigan State and over Florida State. If Bill Carmody's team can win at Ohio State this weekend, it can make an interesting case.
My friends, March Madness is here. It has been an unpredictable season at times and the fun is just starting, baby!
