Several sophomores should succeed this season
There were a number of diaper dandies that came on the scene last season who made contributions. In college basketball it is always exciting to check out the newcomers.
For the 2009-10 campaign, I am looking forward to seeing guard John Wall at Kentucky. I can't wait to see Derrick Favors down at Georgia Tech and Avery Bradley at Texas. These guys will be special.
There are guys who come in with big-time reputations and it takes a little time before they become a major factor. Let me lay on you five guys who were diaper dandies last season and should be impact performers as sophomores in 2009-10.
These guys will make further strides, elevating their games to a higher level. They will also have to deal with higher expectations.
At Michigan State, Delvon Roe was bothered by injuries last season. He showed flashes of brilliance and has a world of potential. Roe can dominate on the glass and that is important when playing for Tom Izzo. He is a physical presence who should put up more impressive numbers.
North Carolina's Ed Davis is a player that coaches and experts know all about. Fans may be surprised to see his numbers shoot up. With Tyler Hansbrough in the NBA now, there will be greater expectations from Davis. He could be one of the premier big men next season.
With Jrue Holiday and Darren Collison in the pros, Ben Howland will be counting more on 6-5 guard Malcolm Lee. He should get a lot more minutes for the Bruins.
Chris Singleton showed some flashes early last season. The 6-9 Singleton will be counted on more by coach Leonard Hamilton. The sophomore is versatile and talented, though he has to get a better understanding of good shot selection.
At Syracuse, 6-7 Kris Joseph could be a pleasant surprise. He is very active, a good offensive rebounder who can excel in transition. He has a good wingspan which will help on defense. Look for his minutes to increase as he contributes more to the Orange.
